We [ariseandrejoice, thankyoujames and myself] went to the Jardin Botanico de Bogota in Colombia, South America and were surprised to find an ongoing butterfly exhibit. It was an overcast day and when it began to rain we headed into the exhibit. It was natural light so I kicked up my ISO, put a set of extension tubes on my 70-300 lens and started shooting.
About 20 species of Owl butterflies [Caligo memnon] are found in secondary forests and rain forests from Mexico to the Amazon. Large "eye spots" on their wings [not shown here] are designed to confuse predators.
